Baden- A Zürich hidden gem
Okay- to be fair, that's a small lie. Baden isn't technically part of the Canton of Zürich and rather in Canton Aargau, but its so close to Zürich (15 mins by train!) that I consider it one of those hidden gems around Zürich.
If you're looking for a couples photoshoot location near Zürich that isn't overrun with other photographers and couples, Baden is your answer. And specifically, Villa Boveri is one of the most underrated photoshoot locations in the entire region.
Villa Boveri: A Couples Photoshoot in Baden, Aargau
I had wanted to shoot at Villa Boveri for a long time. So when I found out that Mel was from Baden herself, it felt like the perfect excuse.
For full transparency: Mel and Gabe are a real couple and very much in love, but this was a couples shoot rather than an actual wedding. (They're also both models — go follow @mel_and_gabe, you won't regret it.)
Villa Boveri was built between 1896 and 1898. The villa itself is stunning, but it's the gardens that will genuinely surprise you. There are two separate sections: a landscape garden and a Neo-Baroque terraced garden, with sculptural works by Hildebrand, Georgii, Breton, Ebbinghaus and other 20th century artists scattered throughout. It's the kind of place you wander into and forget to leave.
Best Time of Year for a Photoshoot at Villa Boveri
While we had incredibly hot summers this year, and lovely sunsets, it was this one day when the weather was suddenly not so amazing. But as I always tell my clients, every type of weather creates for something unique! You just have to be open for it.
We had two completely different vibes for this photoshoot as we also had two different locations.
One of them being Villa Boveri, and the other one by the river. Let's dive into both of them.
The Second Location: Kappelinseli, Baden
I had scouted a second spot by the river that locals apparently know well but visitors rarely find. In true hidden gem fashion, we couldn't actually locate it until after the shoot was already finished.. classic.
So we ended up at Kappelinseli instead, a quiet little spot right by the water that was completely empty on a Sunday evening. Despite the clouds, it was hot and humid, and Mel and Gabe bravely waded straight in. Those are always my favourite shots- the ones where the couple just goes for it!
I know (and you will know) a session has gone well when I can't stop laughing behind the camera.

While the park is still a private area, you are permitted to do photography (no drones) without previous approval.
