Family Photoshoot in Mallorca: Why Shoulder Season Is the Best

Shoulder season in Mallorca is the best. You get mild weather (if you can even call it that) and not too many tourists. Especially for families who can take time off then! The best of both worlds.

This May, while I was visiting family there, I had the chance to do a family photoshoot for some friends from Switzerland. Their kids are super sweet and active, and therefore I chose the quiet moments of the morning to take advantage of the solitude, although to be fair, there were already lots of retired couples enjoying the sun!

Family photoshoots are a type of photography that I rarely do, not because I don't enjoy doing it, but because I'm so focused on couple photoshoots, like engagements and weddings, that I sometimes forget how fun it is to work with kids. Ideally I get to grow up with my clients and eventually start shooting their maternity photos and then, finally, their kids as well.

WHERE SHOULD I GET MY PHOTOS TAKEN?

This really depends on you, your style and your kids.

For this photoshoot and to fit the itinerary of the family, we met at Santa Ponsa as it was on the way for them to their final destination of the day. This family wanted photos of the family more so than of the landscape. But we all know that Mallorca is not short of amazing landscapes! So I put a small list below for you. However, there are lots of hidden gems for photography sessions in Mallorca, which we can discuss together once you've confirmed your shooting with me.

Best Places for a Family Photoshoot in Mallorca

  • Palma Old Town and Parc de la Mar: Narrow cobbled streets, golden stone walls and the cathedral as a backdrop. Perfect for relaxed walking shots.
  • Es Trenc and Cap de ses Salines: Soft white sand and turquoise water. Kids can run and splash while I capture the moment.
  • Port de Sóller and Sóller: Colorful boats, the vintage tram and charming streets.
  • Deià and Valldemossa: Stone villages surrounded by mountains, ideal for a romantic, timeless feel.
  • Alcúdia Old Town and Cala Agulla: Medieval walls and a family-friendly beach in one area.
  • Cap de Formentor or La Dragonera: Dramatic cliffs and sea views for a more adventurous family session.

Documentary-Style Family Photography: How I Work With Kids

A question I got back then was: how do I make sure that my kids behave and pose for the photos?

My photography style is much more documentary than posed. What does this mean exactly? Well, in my eyes, I think the best photos come from real moments: when you are playing with your kids, their genuine laughs, when they try to eat your nose (real story), and so on. These are the photos that I love the most when I look at my parents' photo albums, when we were running and laughing and playing with them. This is also the reason why I always bring props that look good in the pictures to keep them entertained, and maybe even learn something new! Depending on their age, obviously.

I am a big fan of kites, and often go flying them with my husband, so I brought a colorful one for the kids to play with! Apparently they had never flown one, so it was lovely to see dad teaching them and how excited and proud they were once they were able to fly it by themselves. I also brought bubbles... needless to say, they weren't popular at all with these kids. So yeah, I always bring a few things that I think might be interesting for them, and then go from there. You're always welcome to bring your own props as well! If you have a cute picnic blanket or an idea that you'd like to try out (I'm thinking a fairy photoshoot!), you are always welcome to tell me more about it and we'll make it happen!

HOWEVER, and I write it in caps because it's a big however, there is always time for a properly posed photo. Something a bit more classic for your Christmas cards or to send to the grandparents, or even for your kids to bring to school on their "tell us more about you" day, haha. It's amazing growing up and comparing your family photos to the ones of previous years and seeing how your style, your smile and your acne (lol) have changed. So I will always do a bit of both.

What Does a Family Photoshoot Include?

My sessions consist of three types of photography: candid moments, details, and posed photos. This way there's something for everyone and we can tell the full story.

Would you like to book a family photoshoot in Mallorca or in Switzerland with me?

I spend most of my year in Switzerland, currently residing in Zürich. But I also do family photoshoots anywhere around the country and during the summers in Mallorca.

Feel free to ask about my current calendar! I'll be happy to hear from you.

What is the best season for a Family Photoshoot in Mallorca?

The shoulder seasons, April to June and September to October, are the best time. The light is soft, the temperatures are comfortable for active kids, and the beaches and villages are far less crowded than in July and August. Spring also gives you green hills and wildflowers, while early autumn brings warm sea and golden light.

What is the Best Time of Day for a Family Photoshoot in Mallorca?

Early morning (right after sunrise) is my favorite: quiet locations, soft light and kids who still have lots of energy. Golden hour, the last hour or so before sunset, is the second best option, with warm, glowing light. In summer I avoid midday, when the sun is harsh and hot for little ones.

What are the Best Places for a Family Photoshoot in Switzerland?

  • Zürich: Lake Zürich promenade, Zürichhorn Park, Lindenhof, the Old Town (Niederdorf) and Uetliberg for panoramic views.
  • Lucerne: Chapel Bridge, the lakefront and views of Mount Pilatus.
  • Lavaux Vineyards (Lake Geneva): Terraced vineyards with the lake below, especially lovely in autumn.
  • Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald: Waterfalls, green valleys and classic Alpine scenery.
  • Appenzell: Rolling hills, traditional wooden houses and cows with bells, great for playful kids.
  • Bern Old Town and the Aare River: Arcaded streets and turquoise river views.

What is the Best Season for a Family Photoshoot in Switzerland?

Each season offers something different:

  • Spring (April to May): Blossoms, fresh green meadows and mild temperatures.
  • Summer (June to August): Long days, lakes for splashing and Alpine flowers.
  • Autumn (September to October): Golden light, colorful leaves and vineyards. This is my personal favorite.
  • Winter (December to February): Snow, cozy outfits and Christmas markets, perfect for magical holiday photos.
  • Best Time of Day for a Family Photoshoot in Switzerland

In spring, summer and autumn, morning and golden hour give the softest light and the fewest people at popular spots.

In summer, the sun sets late, so a relaxed evening session works well for kids.

In winter the days are short, so late morning or early afternoon is usually best.
